Volunteer FAQs

Frequently asked questions about becoming a Jewish Big Brother Big Sister volunteer.

What does it take to be a Jewish Big Brother or Big Sister?
All it takes is a desire to have fun and share your time. Many ordinary activities – taking  a walk, riding a bike, watching a movie, eating lunch together – become extraordinary when shared with a child or with an adult who has a disability. You’ll be having fun while at the same time showing someone that you care. Volunteers must be 21 years of age or older to volunteer in our community based program, and 18 or older and a college student to volunteer in our school based program.

Who can be a Jewish Little Brother or Little Sister?
Little Brothers and Little Sisters range in age from 6-18 years old and come from diverse backgrounds. For example, they can be children from single parent homes or families new to the United States, or children experiencing special circumstances. Littles live in communities in Greater Boston and are matched with Bigs who reside in the area. Some  Littles are Jewish and some are not.

Who can participate in the Friend 2 Friend program?
Friend 2 Friend participants are 18 years of age or older, live and work or go to school in Greater Boston, and are able to access transportation. They have wide-ranging interests, skills, and a desire to make new friendships and explore their communities.

What types of activities do Bigs and Littles or Friend 2 Friend matches share together?
Matches in our Big Brother Big Sister and Friend 2 Friend programs enjoy activities in which they both share an interest. Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters will help you discover things to do and places to go; we distribute a monthly e-mail highlighting area activities and events. From time to time, we also have tickets available for the theater, movies, museums, and sporting events. We plan a number of group events throughout the year such as Game Day, Chanukah parties, Passover Interactive Seders, and bowling outings.

Who do I contact if I have a questions?
Your social worker or Friend 2 Friend worker is always available to answer any of your questions either by telephone or e-mail.
