Wins the Ruderman Prize for
Disability Inclusion

Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Boston has been selected to receive the 2012 Ruderman Prize in Disability from the Ruderman Family Foundation.

In its award, the Ruderman Foundation highlighted Jewish Big Brothers Big ‘Friend 2 Friend’ and MAGIC programs, ground-breaking efforts that match Big Brother Big Sister-type volunteers as companions for adults who have disabilities. The Ruderman Foundation also recognized JBBBS’ pioneering work in providing Big Brothers and Big Sisters to children with cognitive, behavioral, emotional and physical disabilities.

“Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters delivers hope, inspiration and opportunity to many with disabilities,” said Jay Ruderman, president of the Ruderman Family Foundation. “JBBBS fully exemplifies what the Ruderman Family Foundation looks for when choosing and organization worthy of a Ruderman Prize – and what we look for when choosing a mission we believe strongly in supporting.”

The Ruderman Award to JBBBS is one of only four in the United States, and is among only ten such awards worldwide.

JBBBS’ CEO Harvey Lowell said: "Our Friend 2 Friend and MAGIC programs for adults, and our Jewish Big Brothers Big Sister programs that include children with disabilities are all designed to strengthen our community by making sure that every single member of it is guaranteed a welcoming, enduring and important role within it. We are honored and proud to receive one of the first Ruderman Prizes.”

The mission of the Ruderman Family Foundation is two-fold: Promoting the full inclusion of individuals with disabilities in the Jewish community through meaningful programs and public awareness and in fostering cooperation and a stronger relationship between Israel and the American Jewish Community. Ruderman Prizes will be presented annually to ten organizations that represent the best in inclusion and in promoting public awareness for Jews with disabilities in Israel and throughout the Diaspora.
