A message from our CEO Jeffrey Savit
Hooray, hooray, the Summer of 2020 officially arrived on Sunday. Yes the weather is simply summer-like, and the Atlantic Ocean beckons, but life remains so decidedly choppy. Even though Phase 3 of Massachusetts’ reopening appears to be near, many of our Littles, Bigs, Friends, and the families we serve have been profoundly impacted by the pandemic. Covid-19 has literally sapped away the social connection, education, and fun from far too many of our community members.
And yet, with all these transitions and changes, Covid-19 will never compromise JBBBS’ continuum of caring, innovative services to best meet the needs of our Littles, Bigs, Friends, and their families. Here are just a few examples of the support we are providing during this challenging time:
1. Knowing that summer camp would not be an option for most of our Littles, we wanted to make sure that we did something nice for our kids. Hence, a few weeks ago, 11 of our JBBBS staff members hand delivered personalized summer gift packages consisting of lawn games, board games and art supplies, as well as a $20 bill to purchase pizza or ice cream, to the homes of our 70+ camp scholarship recipients.
Representative of the many heartfelt responses we received, one mother wrote: “Your generosity brought tears to my eyes not often we find kind people like you…Thank you so much for taking your time to this for us.” In turn her daughter wrote, “I would like to thank you for taking your time and stopping by. I will definitely have a lot of fun with the gifts this summer. Also thank you for the money I put it in my piggy bank.”
2. Though we were disappointed that our traditional Yom Sport event had to be cancelled, we were determined not to let our loyal athletic participants down. In its place, JBBBS and our partners at CJP created a tremendous Facebook Live virtual Yom Zoom event on June 14th, where we provided both a slideshow of past Yom Sport memories and testimonials, as well as an actual virtual, fun workout from one of JCC Greater Boston’s fabulous trainers. I am elated to report that the event attracted more than 1,200 viewings, and here is the link to Yom Zoom in case you missed it.
3. And finally, we are also thrilled to report that we will be awarding $244,000 in college and graduate school academic scholarships to 13 new Undergraduate applicants, 29 returning Undergraduate applicants, and 4 Graduate applicants, all of whom are or were Littles in our Children’s Program. May the climate be safe enough this Fall for our scholars to be able to attend their colleges and universities.
Yes, life has dealt us lemons these past few months, but here at JBBBS, we are in the business of making lemonade no matter what. My friends, we depend upon your philanthropic support to enable us to continually make the lives of all of our participants as rich as possible.
I hope you will consider making a gift to JBBBS during this our 100th anniversary year so we can continue to be there for our children, our adults with disabilities and their families at a time when they need us more than ever.
My heartfelt thanks, stay healthy and safe, and enjoy the starts to your summer.
P.S. Please consider signing up for Amazon Smile and designating JBBBS as your charitable partner, so that whenever you might be buying items on Amazon, we will be receiving .5% of every purchase you make.
