When Big Brother, Bill, won a SiriusXM contest for pair of tickets to see R&B/hip hop star, Usher, perform live at the TD Garden, he said Little Brother, Mark, was the obvious choice to attend with him. “There weren’t really any runners up,” said Bill who, with support from Mark’s mom, Cherisse, set about contacting Sirius marketing staff to inquire about the possibility of meeting Usher.
“The first e-mail I wrote landed upon the desk of [someone] who served as a Big Brother in New York City. My e-mail mentioned that Mark was my ‘Little.’ He was hooked and went out of his way to connect me with Usher’s management team. To say the least, the opportunity to meet somebody Mark idolizes was amazing.”
Bill noted that his own favorite part of the evening was bearing witness to Mark’s “pure joy.”
Usher – who operates a charity called New Look, took interest in Mark, too. Usher, wish support from his mother, founded New Look in 1999, at the age of 20. Usher’s New Look is dedicated to advancing the next generation of leadership, connecting at-risk and underserved youth to positive mentors. Mentors not unlike Bill.
“When we met, Usher’s advice to Mark was to stay in school,” said Bill noting that Mark’s mother would have approve. Before he and Bill left for the concert, Cherisse made sure he finished his homework.
