She did it! She walked across the stage while her full name was read aloud for everyone to hear. We were all cheering from the second row, just beaming at how proud we were of all of Lexi’s accomplishments! During the past three years, Lexi and I have become more and more like real-life sisters and less like a Big and Little match. I have watched her mature into a young woman who doesn’t shy away as quickly from stepping out of her comfort zone. I remembered every step we’ve taken together these past three years as I watched Lexi walk towards that diploma and her future right out in front of her.
I kept thinking back to our first meeting: I was so nervous. I never thought that she would open up, and I doubted I could be the mentor she needed. But with time and care and patience, we both learned more about each other – challenged each other but ultimately became great friends. Lexi has taught me so much about myself. I hope that she knows that I wouldn’t be who I am today if it weren’t for her friendship.
But this isn’t about me. It’s about Lexi. The graduate. Everything I knew she could do, she did. I’m so proud!
