My life wouldn’t be the same without my big sister. I’ve looked up to her my entire life and always try to follow in her footsteps. She has been a constant role model and show of support for me: helping with homework, sharing advice, someone to confide in. She has always been there for me. If you ask anybody with a big sister, I’m sure they’ll tell you something similar: There’s nothing like having one.
Our Little Sisters feel the same way about their “Bigs.” While not sisters in the traditional sense (our Big and Little Sisters aren’t related to one another like me with mine!), they express similar sentiment: What could be better than a mentor, a friend, with whom to talk, catch a favorite film, get an ice cream?
At JBBBS, friendship really is the next big thing! Our girls look up to their mentors like real-life big sisters: fixtures in their lives, another strong role model. While our Little Sisters’ circumstances vary completely, they each know one thing to be true: Mentors matter!
And it isn’t just the kids who benefit from involvement in our programs. Big Sisters do too. Says Friend 2 Friend Case Worker and Big Sister, Mary Weinburg, about why she mentors, “I want to empower women and girls to be a part of a community that builds them up. There really is something special about mentoring that is so hard to describe. When playing a part in a young girl’s life, not only do you benefit from the connection you make, but you see the impact of what your presence does for her.”
