We provide a high degree of match support at JBBBS, making social workers in the Children’s Program and caseworkers in Friend 2 Friend, available to participants and volunteers to field questions and concerns, to brainstorm and provide information to guide each match to be its most successful and supportive. In both programs for children in need and adults with disabilities, staff held trainings this month in response to a request from volunteers
In the JBBBS Children’s Program, social workers hosted the first of its “BIG Talks,” on June 4, which invited participation from volunteers seeking to learn both from clinical staff and other Big Brothers and Sisters and to chat about shared experiences.
Said Friend 2 Fried caseworker, Mary Weinburg, “We recently held a Volunteer Group Training for our Friend 2 Friend volunteers in Coolidge Corner on the topic of navigating relationships including sexuality and social skills, decision-making and safety.” Sally Fogel, M.Ed, who has been an AASECT Certified Sexuality Educator for over 20 years, and on the faculty of Wheelock College, Boston University School of Social Work, and Boston College, led a discussion for the group of 20 volunteers. Said Weinburg, “Volunteers had the opportunity to discuss their experiences and ask questions of Sally. And due to positive response, we’re going to hold other trainings.”
A second volunteer training for Friend 2 Friend volunteers has been slated for Thursday, October 22. Topic to-be-determined. More information forthcoming.
