Big Brunch Honoree Dean Cohen

JBBBS is thrilled to honor four incredible JBBBS volunteers with the Chaverut Award at this year’s Big Brunch on October 26. These four volunteers truly exemplify the word chaverut which is Hebrew for friendship.
Dean Cohen is one of this year’s honorees and we had the pleasure to recently ask him a few questions about his volunteer experience.
Why did you decide to first volunteer with JBBBS?
Ever since I had completed my undergraduate, graduate dental education and hospital residency, I had always wanted to make a positive difference in this world. As a Jew, I have always believed in Tzedakah. Paying it forward is an important value of mine and my family’s.
What is your favorite thing about volunteering with JBBBS?
Meeting other JBBBS/Friend2Friend matches over the years. Dan my Man and I have enjoyed going to many wonderful outings such as Passover Seders, Hanukkah Parties, and Food Truck Events.
What are your favorite activities to do with your match?
Dan my Man and I have always enjoyed going out to breakfast together. We love getting coffee and bagels with schmears!
What is your favorite memory of your JBBBS volunteer experience?
When Dan my Man asked me to have an Aliyah at his Bar Mitzvah in 2002 and Dan having an Aliyah at my son’s B’nai Mitzvah 6 years ago!

What have you Learned from volunteering with JBBBS?
Volunteering with JBBBS for over 30 years has taught me commitment, empathy, reliability, patience, active listening skills, positive role modeling, flexibility, adaptability , enthusiasm, positivity, and optimism!
What are three words that you would use to describe your JBBBS volunteer experience?
Amazing, Rewarding and Enduring!
What would you say to someone who is considering volunteering with JBBBS?
Do it! Being matched with Dan my Man in Friend2Friend for 30 years and being a Big Brother in LA for 8 years has been an honor!
Do you have any advice for someone who is just starting out their volunteer journey with JBBBS?
You won’t regret it!
