Full Circle: From JBBBS Breakfasts to a Perfect Match

Hayley Samen

My father served as president of JBBBS for a time, so I was lucky to be connected to the program from a young age. I grew up learning from members of the community and admiring the spirit of tikkun olam JBBBS inspired volunteers giving their time, energy, and hearts to help others.

Growing up, I loved attending the JBBBS breakfasts. Eating the best bagels, lox, and cream cheese while hearing about heartwarming stories of friendship filled me with joy—and made me dream of the day I’d have a match of my own. I still remember the moment I learned about the Friend2Friend program—I knew instantly that it was the perfect fit for me. I couldn’t wait to be a friend.

When I found out I was matched with Michela, I was thrilled. I couldn’t wait to meet her. From the very first moment, it was magic! As someone who tends to be introverted and enjoys when others take the lead in conversation, I was excited to find someone so full of ideas, energy, and curiosity. From collaging with vintage fashion magazines to metal detecting or hunting for sea glass at the beach, Michela enjoys an endless list of fun and creative activities. I couldn’t wait to dive in.

It quickly became clear that Michela is, frankly, way cooler than I am—and I felt lucky that she wanted to hang out with me. She lives in an artist loft with her parents, is a brilliant artist herself, and is constantly doing fun and interesting activities.

Once we started spending time together, things only got better. One especially cold and windy day this winter, when most people were huddled indoors, Michela and I had planned to search for treasures along the river. I wasn’t sure what to expect with the weather, but it ended up being an absolute blast. That day cemented something I already suspected: with Michela, anything can be fun. She brings that kind of energy.

I honestly feel like I won the lottery with this match. I’m so grateful to JBBBS for introducing me to such an incredible friend. I’m looking forward to many more adventures, lots of ice cream, and plenty of great conversations.
